Telehealth Counseling

Online Therapy in Florida

Online therapy lets you work with a licensed Florida counselor from wherever you are in the state, without adding a commute to an already full schedule.

All of my sessions are conducted by secure video, no in-person office. That's a deliberate choice: it makes consistent, quality care accessible whether you live in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Naples, or anywhere else in Florida.

This page walks through how online therapy actually works, who it fits well, and what to expect from scheduling through your first session.

How does online therapy with a Florida-licensed counselor work?

You schedule a session, log into a secure video platform at your appointment time, and meet with me just as you would in an office, talking through what's going on and working toward your goals together. Sessions are typically weekly or biweekly and last about 45-50 minutes.

As an LMHC licensed in Florida (MH14106), I can provide therapy to anyone physically located in Florida at the time of the session, regardless of which city or county they live in.

Who is online therapy a good fit for, and who is it not?

Online therapy works well for most people dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, trauma, women's mental health concerns, and general life stress. It's especially useful if you have a demanding schedule, live far from specialized providers, have mobility or transportation limitations, or simply prefer the privacy of your own space.

It's generally not appropriate for acute psychiatric emergencies, active suicidal crisis requiring immediate intervention, or situations needing in-person medical monitoring; those situations call for emergency services or a higher level of care.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Telehealth is a well-established way to deliver therapy for many common concerns, including anxiety, depression, and trauma, and many people find it works well for them. What tends to matter most is the strength of the therapeutic relationship and showing up consistently, rather than whether sessions happen in an office or over video.

Is the platform secure and private, and is my information protected?

Yes. Sessions are conducted through a HIPAA-compliant video platform designed to protect your privacy, and your records are kept confidential according to the same legal and ethical standards that apply to in-person therapy.

I'd still recommend joining sessions from a private space, headphones can add an extra layer of privacy if you're in a shared home or office.

What do I need technically to start online therapy?

You'll receive a secure link before each session; no special software installation is required.

  • A smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone
  • A stable internet connection
  • A private, quiet space for the duration of the session
  • Headphones, optional but helpful for privacy and sound quality

Can I do online therapy from anywhere in Florida?

Yes. Because I'm licensed in Florida, I can see clients anywhere in the state by telehealth, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Naples, and smaller cities and rural areas throughout Florida.

Florida licensing law requires the client to be physically located in Florida during sessions; if you travel outside the state, we may need to reschedule for when you're back.

How does scheduling and the free consultation work?

We start with a free 15-minute phone or video consultation so you can ask questions and get a feel for whether we're a good fit before committing to ongoing sessions. From there, we schedule a recurring appointment time that works with your routine.

Does insurance cover online therapy in Florida?

Yes, most major insurance plans, including Aetna, AvMed, Cigna, and Florida Blue/BCBS, cover telehealth therapy the same as in-person sessions. Session cost is $125, and I can help you understand your specific coverage before you begin.

Any tips for a good online therapy session at home?

  • Choose a quiet, private room where you won't be interrupted
  • Test your camera, microphone, and internet ahead of time
  • Keep water and tissues nearby
  • Let household members know you'll be unavailable during the session
  • Give yourself a few quiet minutes before and after to transition

Therapy Basics

Is Online Therapy as Effective as In-Person Therapy?

Online therapy is a well-established format, and many people find it works as well for them as meeting in an office, particularly for anxiety, depression, and relationship concerns. The right choice often comes down to personal preference, comfort with technology, and logistical needs like scheduling and privacy at home. Many people also choose to combine both formats over time depending on what's happening in their lives.

Does Insurance Cover Therapy in Florida?

Many insurance plans in Florida provide some coverage for mental health therapy, since federal law generally requires mental health benefits to be comparable to medical benefits, but the specifics, including copays, deductibles, and which providers are in-network, depend entirely on your individual plan. The best way to know exactly what's covered is to call the member services number on your insurance card and ask directly. Many therapists, including practices that accept major insurers like Aetna, AvMed, Cigna, and Florida Blue, can also help verify benefits before your first session.

What Happens in a First Therapy Session?

In a first therapy session, your therapist will ask about what brought you in, your current symptoms or concerns, and relevant background such as your health history and past experiences with therapy. There's no pressure to have everything figured out; the goal is to start building an understanding of your situation and to see whether the therapist feels like a good fit for you.
